When ordering a doctoral tam, Ph.D. tam, or Beefeater, please be sure to include your hat size or head measurement, the type of tam you are receiving, color of velvet and type of tassel.

Considering a doctoral gown but not sure what it will look like. The nice folks at the cap and gown shop have recently uploaded a "custom doctoral robe designer" that lets you do just that. Select the color gown, color velvet panels, color velvet chevrons, even the piping color, and before your eyes you'll get an idea what your academic attire will turn out like (depending of course how close your monitor's colors are to the fabric).

Although in years past, only doctors wore velvet tams, many professors / faculty members with master's degrees are now choosing to wear a velvet tam in place of the traditional mortarboard (used by students) as it is more comfortable and further distinguishes the faculty from their students.

Unlike the doctoral tam shown below with gold bullion tassel, the master's tam uses a plain black tassel. We keep masterstams in stock in traditional black velvet, or can special make them in your choice of colors.

Most faculty members purchasing master's tams choose the six sided model. However four sided and eigh tided tams are also available.

Although not normally "required", most faculty member's choose to wear velvet tams in place of mortarboards, as they look much nicer and help differentiate between the faculty member and his/her student. Academic Tams (doctoral tams) are available with choice of "silky tassel" or gold bullion tassel.
Tams are also available in 4 -- 6 -- and 8 -- sided models Tams are normally made of black velvet, however we can make them for you in other velvets, for special regalia. The PhD blue velvet tam has become increasingly popular. Red "Beefeater" caps (also known as Beefeaters) are also available.

One of the nicest feature of this web site is the amount of information it gives, rather than just pictures and prices. The deluxe doctor's gown is essentially made-to-measure quality gown, but at "off the rack" prices. What we've done is take all of the fancy features of the made to measure gowns, using the most popular fabric, and created a deluxe gown, but instead of using a separate pattern for each individual to incorporate unusual neck circumference, sleeve length, etc., we use "off the rack" sizes based on the wearer's height and weight. The deluxe doctoral robes are generously cut with 7" more fabric woven into the fluting, they have extra plush velvet, bell sleeves, a pocket slit for the hand, braided cording behind the neck, etc. However, because we can make them in multiples (verses one at a time for completely made-to-measure) we were able to knock the price down to $290.00 for the deluxe gown with either generic black or Ph.D. Blue velvet trim. We believe this to be the finest off the rack doctoral gown available at any price! Our most popular, Deluxe Ph.D. blue velvet gown is pictured on our web site, however optional piping is also available on this gown. We can also custom make the deluxe gown in your choice of fabric colors, velvet colors and piping to match the regalia of most school requiring specialized regalia.
